Katerina Ostroushko, age 90, of Minneapolis passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016. She cared deeply about her family and had a generous heart; she will be missed. Katerina was born near Zhytomyr, northwestern Ukraine on September 6, 1925. She and millions of her countrymen lived during a time of immense human suffering due to losses of life during the Second World War, and previous to that the genocide that was inflicted by Josef Stalin known as holodomor. Katerina, barely age 16, was taken from her family, unable to speak German, and forced to work as a housekeeper and nanny for a wealthy Nazi family in Austria. Following the end of the war, Katerina met her husband Wasyl Ostroushko while visiting a friend in an Austrian hospital. They were ultimately married, and emigrated to America in 1952 with two young children, Ludmilla and George. They settled in N.E. Minneapolis because Katerina’s husband had read Huckleberry Finn in his youth and wanted to live on the great Mississippi River. Later, brothers Peter and Taras completed their family. Katerina quickly grew deep roots in Minneapolis; she loved to garden and instilled this love in her family. She was a great cook, especially of traditional Ukrainian foods like borscht and holubsti, and she inspired her children to be good cooks. She believed in the church and understood family to be everything. Katerina was preceded in death by husband Wasyl “Bill" Ostroushko; granddaughters Laura Ostroushko and Jessica Ostroushko Harris. Survived by daughter Ludmilla Prestwich (Peter), sons George Ostroushko (Lynne), Peter Ostroushko (Marge), and Taras Ostroushko. Survived by her grandchildren: Andrew, Natalie, Chris, Jon, Nate, Mike, and Anna. Also survived by her great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Visitation at KOZLAK-RADULOVICH CHAPEL (1918 University Ave. NE) Monday, April 18th, 2016 from 5-8 PM with Vigil Prayers (Panachyda) at 7 PM. Funeral service at ST. MICHAEL’S & ST. GEORGE’S UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH (505 NE 4th St.) Tuesday, April 19th, 2016 at 10 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30. Interment Sunset Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Minneapolis.
