Obituary for Carol A. Neumann (Heryla)

Carol A. Neumann (Heryla)

Neumann, Carol A. Age 84, of Osseo, MN, formerly of Rush City and Maple Grove, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2019 at her home. She is survived by her ten children, Mary (Dennis) Zacharias, Joe (Barb), Pat, Cindy (Bill) Swan, Julie, Bill (Marcy), Laurie (Jim) Thompson, Chris (Kat) Jobanputra , Tom, and John (Leslie); twenty-seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Juncewski (Harold) and Margaret Soule (Dave); brother Bob (Charlene); many other loving relatives and life-long friends. Carol was born on December 24, 1934, in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Heryla. She graduated from Columbia Heights High School in 1952.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; granddaughter, Amy; parents, John and Elizabeth; sister, Jean and brother, John.

Carol was a great soul and one of a kind. She loved meeting new people wherever she went and would strike up conversations with complete strangers. Anyone who ever met Carol never forgot the experience. Everywhere she went she made a new friend. She was like a human firecracker - full of energy and wisecracks. She had a deep sense of caring for what was going on around the world. Carol was a life-long political activist – always working for the underdog. Her humor, humility, uninhibited enthusiasm for life and all that it offered was powerful. Her deep sense of caring for her family, her country and for the rest of humanity was unforgettable.

Carol enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, life on the lake and trips to the casino. She enjoyed her golf league and was extremely proud of the fact that she got two holes-in-one during the same season on the same hole.

Carol was a huge presence in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Private memorial service and interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation to the Ralph G. Neumann Memorial Scholarship Fund at Osseo Senior High School in Osseo, MN. “Be someone’s sunshine when their skies are grey!”

It's so hard to lose a best friend! I keep waiting for the phone to ring and hear Carol's voice to tell me to turn on the TV and watch something. Or I pick up the phone to call Carol to tell her something that happened. We shared numerous trips with our husbands, countless games of 500, dutifully recorded (with commentary) in notebooks. She taught me that it's OK to say NO, how to cope with the loss of a spouse and so many other priceless gifts. Carol was an avid observer of Congress in session. She kept the CSPAN directory by her chair and didn't hesitate to call the office of a congressperson and praise them or more likely to "set them straight". A frequent target of needing her advice was Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. In Carol's honor and memory I have sent a donation of $100. to Amy McGrath who is running against McConnell in 2020. She is an ex Marine Major, fighter pilot and mother and cares deeply for the "least of these" and "liberty and justice for all". Rest easy, dear Friend Carol, knowing you have inspired so many to carry on for you. Always, your buddy, Joyce

My family and I send our deepest condolences on the passing of Carol. My mom (Carmella VanHeel Peterson) and Ralph were first cousins. Several years ago, my dad (Bob) introduced me to Carol through political events in our area and I was immediately drawn into her passion. Before she sold her beautiful house on Rush Lake, my dad and I stopped by unexpectedly and she was so gracious and proudly introduced us to many family members who were visiting. We are thinking of each of you as you mourn the loss of your beautiful mom, grandma, and friend.
May your cherished memories sustain you.
