Obituary for Douglas H. Kallevig
Kallevig, Douglas H. age 70 of Minneapolis, passed away on 11/18/2020 from complications of COVID-19. Preceded in death by parents, Harold and Marcella, siblings Paul and Debra. He will be greatly missed by loving wife of 22 years, Elena; son Douglas Jr. (Christina); step-son Mike (Elena); daughters Esmeralda (Jeff) and Pamela, sisters Shirley and Barbara, 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, many family members and friends.
Douglas graduated from Richfield High School in 1967 and served in the U.S. Navy as an Electronic Technician First Class from March 1969 till January 1976. The course of his service took him to Bremerton, WA, Australia, and the Philippines. His Navy buddies remember him as Krash, as “as he had trouble keeping his motorcycle upright.“
After his honorable discharge, he married his first wife Corazon and adopted her two daughters. Their son, Douglas the second, was born in 1978.
Douglas worked as electronic technician and quality assurance inspector until his retirement in 2012 and was well loved by his fellow-workers, who shared with him many laughs and years of friendship. For many years Doug was a member of Mensa society and many Mensans remember his eccentric sense of humor and puns. Since 2006 Doug was a member of the Russian Cultural Center and hundreds of children in Twin Cities knew him as “Grandpa Frost” who handed out gifts at every Yolka – Russian Christmas celebration. He was a natural, but refused to play Santa, claiming that he would fail “Sanity clause.”
In his retirement he became active in day trading and made new friends through Facebook and Meetup. He joined Twin Cities Trading Group and was asked to do a number of presentations, sharing his knowledge and research.
Doug had a big and kind heart. He helped many people. In the last three years he and his second wife Elena supported a number of new immigrants through their adaptation in Twin Cities. In his FB tribute to Doug, one of his wards called him his “Godfather in America.”
Doug was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. His happiest moments were when he felt the patriarch of the family, with 10 grandkids enjoying his jokes and magic tricks. The youngest granddaughter Eleni was too young to join the crowd, but she definitely was the apple of his eye.
We love you, Doug, and we'll miss you forever.
Due to restrictions, the interment on December 3 at Ft. Snelling will be private and video will be available. We plan a virtual celebration of his life – if interested, please contact Elena at info@rusculturemn.com. Memorials preferred to the RCC “Russian Soul.”
