Obituary for Harold Lucs

Harold Lucs, 79, of New Hope, MN passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 10, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, JoAnn, and their children, David, Catherine (David), and Peter (Emily).

Born in Riga, Latvia to Osvalds and Lidija, Harold emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1950, settling in Minneapolis. As a teenager, Harold was a member of a Latvian dance troupe, an avid track and field participant, and a 1961 graduate of Minneapolis South High School. In August 1964, he enlisted in the US Army, and in December 1964, married JoAnn (Nepsha). Harold then served as an MP in Germany, achieving the rank of Sergeant with an honorable discharge in 1967. Returning to the Twin Cities, Harold completed his college degree in Business at the University of Minnesota in 1976 and worked for many years at Control Data and later at other companies as a senior purchasing agent.

Throughout life, Harold enjoyed being active and had numerous hobbies including model trains, bowling, golf, card games, and home improvement projects. He especially treasured time at the family’s lake home where he fished, swam and waterskied for over five decades. His love of history was apparent in the countless books he read. He and JoAnn made many trips visiting friends and family across the U.S as well as historic places in the Mediterranean and Europe, including Latvia where he met cousins and relatives during his only trip to his place of birth.

Harold had countless friends from every phase of life with whom he shared laughs, stories, and memorable moments. He will be remembered for his kindness and patience. In addition to his loving wife and children, Harold is also survived by his four grandchildren, Tatiana, Gabriella, Henry, and Clementine, of whom he was very proud and loved spending time with them or attending their recitals and sporting events.

A faithful and active member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral, Harold served on the parish board, helping in many ways behind the scenes of parish life, singing with the cathedral choir, and enjoying fellowship with the perohi group, the balalaika orchestra, and the Men’s and Vets Clubs.

Harold lived a full and blessed life, enduring a painful series of health complications over the last month of his life with patience and faith in the hope of the Resurrection.

May his memory be eternal and may his soul dwell with the blessed.
