Obituary for Harry Sarich

Our Harry passed away October 17, 2023 @ the age of 97. He was born to Mitro and Pearl Sarich 9-26-26. His mother died shortly after. Mitro married her sister Mary and together they raised Harry, his twin sister (Irene), older brother (Marty), older sisters (Ann & Elsie), and younger sisters (Ellen, MaryAnn, Lorraine). Working on a farm with his buddy during the summer was one of his favorite stories from his youth.

He was most proud of his Navy career-joining at age 17. He spoke fondly of his experience in the Philippines as a Seabee in WWII, of crossing the Equator and becoming a shellback, and telling stories of his pet monkeys (Suzy & Tojo). Wearing his Navy baseball cap instantly improved his posture.

Harry gave up an indoor job @ Western Electric for a 35-year career with NSP. Being a lineman-in-charge kept him outside and doing what he loved. He met his wife, Edith, of 67 years, @ an NSP employee picnic thanks to his sister, Ellen, who introduced them.

Harry was happiest when he was outside: whether it be working on his perfectly manicured lawn with flourishing flowers & large vegetable garden, cleaning his gutters from the roof into his 80s, golfing until age 95, or spending 23 winter vacations in Arizona again golfing or in the pool with a Miller Lite.

His indoor talents were many: finding solutions to multiple household problems, finishing the inside of their home built in 1956 (where he lived until his death) and their cabin on Pipe Lake in Cumberland, WI, that he proudly owned for 32 years, and fixing just about anything. He was an active member for much of his adult life in the Shriners, American Legion, VFW, NSP union, and especially @ St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral (Men’s Club, Vets Club, “Diggers,” Church Board, Cemetery Committee).

Harry often spoke of his full life due to his travels with Edith to Europe, Mexico, multiple Navy reunions all over the U. S., and on Alaskan and Caribbean cruises.

He is survived by his loving family, daughter, Judy (Mark) Labine; grandchildren, Lucas (Sarah) Labine, Allyson (Karl) Elfstrom, Emily Labine; almost great-granddaughter (due in January); goddaughter, Cindy; godson, Donald; sister, MaryAnn; nieces & nephews. Memory Eternal and rest peacefully Dad, in polished shoes, with Mom in the cemetery, which you worked in for decades and helped to make it the beautiful place it is today.
