Obituary

SHERLOCK, MARILYN R.

Of Forest Lake, Minnesota, formerly of Mesa, Arizona; Fargo, North Dakota; Westmont, Illinois; and the Twin Cities and Warren, Minnesota. Preceded in death by devoted husband of 56 years, Dennis; parents, LeRoy & Maxine Wood; brother, Gary Wood; sister, Jean Wood Rabon; and faithful companion, Snooky. Survived by loving daughters, Maureen (Bob) Larson and Melissa Sherlock; beloved grandchildren, Grant (Kelly) Larson, Alex Larson and Matthew Larson; adored great-grandson, Mitchell; many other treasured family and friends.

Marilyn Rae Wood Sherlock, 80, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020, leaving a hole in the hearts of her family and friends who miss her ever present smile. Marilyn was born to LeRoy and Maxine Wood on June 30, 1939, near Angus, Minnesota, the eldest of their children, five daughters and one son. After graduating from Warren High School, Marilyn attended the University of North Dakota where she was a Pi Phi Sorority sister and graduated with a B.A. in Education. She moved to the Twin Cities where she taught 3rd and 4th grade. There she met Dennis Sherlock on a blind date and they married in 1962. Their family expanded with the birth of their two daughters, Maureen in 1966, and Melissa in 1969. The family relocated several times for Dennis’s work, including to Westmont, Illinois; Coon Rapids, Minnesota; and Fargo, North Dakota. In 1999, after Dennis’s retirement, they moved to Mesa, Arizona, to escape the Midwest’s cold winters. After Dennis’s passing, her family was grateful to able to move Marilyn back to the Twin Cities in June 2019, blessed to see her nearly every day in her last almost eight months of life. Maureen, Bob, and Melissa were with her as she passed peacefully.

Marilyn loved playing bingo and many card games, especially cribbage, pinochle, and casino. At all of these games, she won way more often than not, no matter who she was playing against. She also loved being pampered, such as getting hand massages and her nails done when her friend Sharon visited. Marilyn was a life-long reader and when reading herself became too difficult, she enjoyed being read to, especially by her daughters and nephew Sean. She had interest in a wide variety of genres. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She absolutely lit up when Mitchell, born in January 2019, visited. Years ago, when she and Dennis were more physically able, they enjoyed going out for dinner (lobster and shrimp were Marilyn’s favorites), getting together with friends, and traveling to places such as California, Tennessee, and Montana. Dennis and Marilyn made a great pair because he could get her anywhere and she was always up for adventures.

Marilyn was a loving, positive, kind-hearted, smart, pleasant person who rarely complained despite the physical struggles she experienced through most of her adulthood. Her ever-present radiant smile was contagious to everyone she encountered. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
