Obituary for Mary Margo Goodspeed (Merchant, Mischke)

Goodspeed, Mary
(Merchant, Mischke)

Mary Margo Goodspeed, age 76, passed away peacefully in Coon Rapids, MN on Thursday, November 28th, 2019, after dealing with Lewy Body Dementia for five years. Mary was born in Rochester, MN to Ben and Rhoda Mischke. She was baptized in Wells, MN, and graduated near the top of her class from Richfield High School. She fell in love with Raymond Merchant, and they had three sons. She worked as a legal secretary for a Bloomington law firm and loved her job. She also loved golf. She had three holes-in-one, and one year, the MGA magazine noted that she even set the record for the most rounds of golf played in a single season! She also loved going up to their cabin in Osakis to relax. She and Ray moved to Mission, Texas after their retirements, and were married for 36 years, until Ray’s death from Alzheimer’s in 1998.

Mary was blessed to fall in love a second time. In 2002 she married Lyle Goodspeed, who had also found his second love in Mary, after the passing of his wife Edith.

Mary continued to golf and enjoyed taking the wheel on winter driving trips to Texas, Florida and Arizona. Country was her music--with George Strait and Loretta Lynn her favorites.

Mary gave to any and all charities. She was loved by everyone and shared her love with her growing and extended family.

In addition to Ray, she was preceded in death by their sons Raymond Jr. and Anthony, and her parents.
Mary is survived by her husband Lyle; son William (Debbie) Merchant; stepsons Steve (Barb) Goodspeed, Gregg (Trudi) Goodspeed, and Brian Goodspeed; grandchildren Rachel, Lindsay, Mary, Rachel, Jessica, Ethan, Luke, Kristen, Joshua, Rebekah, Ruthann, Elizabeth, Ben, Hannah, and Brianna; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She also left behind many other wonderful relatives and friends, including two special ones in Sharon Ahrens and Debra Merchant.

Mary’s family would also like to thank the wonderful people at Volunteers of America in Coon Rapids, and Heartland and Midwest Hospice.
