Obituary for Anatoli Gil Swiridow

Anatoli (Tony) Swiridow passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 17, 2015 in Hinckley, Minn. at the age of 96.

He was born October 25, 1919 in Gatchina, Russia (near St. Petersburg) to Grigori and Maria (Gil) Svirid. Anatoli’s early years were shaped by revolution, civil war and a climate of political suspicion that led to the imprisonment of his father and the temporary exile of Anatoli and his mother to Chinaz, Uzbekistan.

As a young man, Anatoli served as an artilleryman in WWII, fighting to protect his homeland against invasion until he was taken prisoner by the Germans. He twice escaped Nazi forced labor camps and took refuge in the mountains of Austria.

As a displaced person after WWII, Anatoli resettled to South America. While on the USS Sturgis en route to Venezuela, he organized volunteer musicians to play balalaikas and accordions to entertain other passengers. It was on this voyage that fate reunited him with Nina Nikolaevna (Isaeva), a young Russian woman he met on Victory Day. Anatoli and Nina married in Venezuela and remained united until her death in 2006.

In 1959 Anatoli, Nina and their sons Gennady and Michael immigrated to the United States. Anatoli worked as a machinist in Minneapolis. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1971. He enjoyed fishing in Minnesota and Canada, dancing with Nina, laughing with friends, and above all, his family.

Anatoli is remembered for his elaborate Easter egg hunts, cooking for hunters at deer camp, watching soccer (preferably in Spanish), cheering the Dallas Cowboys (unless they were playing the Minnesota Vikings), caring for his vegetable garden, sharing his Russian culture and language with his children and grandchildren, and his strong Christian faith.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nina, his parents and his brothers Gennady and Valentin. He is survived by children, Gennady “Gene” Swiridow (Patricia), Michael Swiridow (Bonnie), Valentina Plant (Michael); grandchildren, Chad Swiridow (Carla), Alison Hanson (Scott), Matthew Swiridow (LeeAnne), Kersten Swiridow, Stephanie Plant, Julia Plant and great grandchildren.

Funeral service at LAKEWOOD CEMETERY CHAPEL (3600 Hennepin Ave. S.) Monday – December 28th, 2015 at 10 AM with visitation one hour prior.
