Dancer meets dancer

It was 1984 just after Martial Law in Poland where I was studying Polish Folk Dance at the University of Maria Skłodowski in Lublin, Poland. I was in dance class when the door opened to the studio and two heads peered at the 80 first year students. The two people tiptoed in the room in order not to disturb us. All eyes were on them. When the session ended, they were introduced as Ania and Edzio from America. Ania's spirit drew me to her and I talked with them for a little while. They were in a more advanced class. Later in the week Edzio and Ania invited me to celebrate the 4th of July with Americans in Mr. Kwiatkowski's room. His tiny room molded us to a tight fit. Ania and Edzio were the American hosts. Ania was like the magician who extracted bottles and glasses and goodies from her tote bag. The significance was that at that time one couldn't get anything in Poland. So I was impressed. We toasted to wee hours of the night having loads of fun and even serious conversations about Poland's situation. I had been nervous about attending the session due to Poland's unrest. I was intrigued with Ania's warmth. I felt as though I had known her all my life. I knew I could trust Ania and Edzio and felt that I had companions that I could turn to. The summer session ended with a concert in a theater. There the two were, backstage with us and wishing us well prior to our performance. I have never forgotten Ania's friendliness and smile. Some years later my brother connected with Ania and Edzio and asked if we were related. It was amazing to see both Edzio and Ania. I couldn't help but be affected by her warmth and out going personality. These are memories that I will cherish forever.
