Obituary for Sylvia Thorpe

Thorpe, Sylvia
May 2nd, 1952 to Aug. 2nd, 2016

Sylvia was born in Detroit Michigan. Her father Arnold Thorpe immigrated to the United States from England in 1948 after WWII. Her mother Gladys (Grounsell) and Sylvia’s older sister Carol joined her father in 1950. Two years after arriving in Michigan, Sylvia was born. Sylvia attended elementary school in the Detroit area and graduated from Henry Ford High School. After graduation, Sylvia went to Michigan State University in Lansing, MI, where she met her future husband and love of her life Dennis Mosman, from Minnesota.

Sylvia and Dennis were married on August 5, 1972 in a beautiful old chapel in the Lansing area. They resided in the Lansing area until approximately 1977 and then moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where they started a family. Lexie was born on October 23, 1981 and Caitlin on Feb. 18th, 1983. Finally, they moved to Maple Grove, MN in 1985.

Sylvia started her career as a nurse at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. Then, she worked at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN, specializing in cardiac care. She finished out her career as an urgent care nurse at Park Nicollet Clinic in Maple Grove, MN.

Sylvia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She adored her two granddaughters, Vivienne (born March 12, 2015) and Minta (born July 8, 2015). Her face would light up when they came to visit. Sylvia and her sister Carol shared a special bond. Family meant everything to her. She was a giving and caring person and will be remembered for her gentle kindness, intelligence, witty sense of humor, and attention to detail.

Sylvia had a joy for life. She explored her artistic side through intricate rubber stamp card design, new cooking styles, jewelry making, gardening, and bird watching. She loved going up to the lake with her family. She was a creative person and continued to be curious and inquisitive until the end of her life.

Sylvia was deeply loved and will be missed by her family and friends. Sylvia is survived by her adoring husband and best friend, Dennis; her children, Lexie (Brandon Yungner) Thorpe and Caitlin (Wes) Mosman Block; granddaughters Vivienne Thorpe and Minta Mosman Block; her sister Carol (Lon) Pratt; and many dear relatives and friends.
